| Stan Hugill has several variations of the tune Santiana one of which is Round the Bay of Mexico. These shanties were probably of West Indian origin. This probably started out as a pump shanty, but was also used as windlass shanties. As iron ships with pumps took the place of wooden ships it were adapted for capstan work (see the article on sea shanties for the definitions of these terms).
The refrain varies widely. There are patterns of the tune for the Gold Rush, Leaving Liverpool, Leaving New York, The Fishes and The Mail. Hugill speculates that the tune does not concern the Mexican General Santa Ana, but Sainte Anne, patron saint of Breton seamen. |
